Vinyl Pressing Review

Wye Oak

Civilian

Reviewed by Jon Rogers on 01.12.2012

Dark and emotional third album by Baltimore duo Wye Oak features understated songwriting and excellent production. Quiet moments crash into gigantic bursts of sound, and the whole album stays pretty interesting. But in the end, the vinyl itself just doesn't stack up. Pretty serious amount of surface noise, nothing special about the packaging, and the vinyl pressing seems too cheap for both the music it contains and the price tag Merge has put on it.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

7.50

Pretty good overall, very heavy and thick sound in places. Well-produced with some great mixing. This is quite dynamic music with a lot of volume changes and ambient song transitions, making it especially unfortunate that there are so many little fuzzy snaps and pops (see "Vinyl Noise").

Pressing Quality:

7.00

The lightweight vinyl seems like it wasn't the best route for this record, as a heavier pressing may have done the actual recordings more justice. Nothing major, but the vinyl pressing honestly seems like it was something of an afterthought.

Vinyl Noise:

6.00

A surprising amount of surface noise. Pops and sizzles in places, especially between songs and in quiet spots, which can be very distracting. A minor issue, but maybe just serious enough to make you stick with the digital version on this one.

Overall Artwork:

6.00

Very simple and minimal. No complaints, but nothing really to look at or enhance the experience either.

Overall Extras:

5.00

Download card, paper sleeve, and that's really it. A simple pressing, but nothing too special about the vinyl version.
